“Before
the world was organized, our Heavenly Father chose Jesus Christ to be our
Savior and Redeemer. The atoning sacrifice of Jesus Christ made it possible for
us to overcome the effects of the Fall. All of the prophets since the world
began have testified of Jesus Christ as our Redeemer.

<span style="font-family: Forte; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">We will all suffer
physical death, but Jesus Christ overcame the obstacle of physical death for
us. When He died on the cross, His spirit became separated from His body. On
the third day, His spirit and His body were reunited eternally, never to be
separated again. He appeared to many people, showing them that He had an
immortal body of flesh and bone. The reuniting of body and spirit is called
resurrection and is a gift promised to each of us. Because of the Resurrection
of Jesus Christ, we will all be resurrected regardless of whether we have done
good or evil in this life. We will have a perfect, immortal body of flesh and
bones that will never again be subject to disease, pain, or death. The
resurrection makes it possible to return to God’s presence to be judged but
does not guarantee that we will be able to live in His presence. To receive
that blessing, we must also be cleansed from sin.

<span style="font-family: Forte; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">God sent His Beloved
Son, Jesus Christ, to overcome the obstacle of sin in addition to the obstacle
of physical death. We are not responsible for the Fall of Adam and Eve, but we
are responsible for our own sins. God cannot look on sin with any degree of
allowance, and sin prevents us from living in His presence. Only through the Savior’s
grace and mercy can we become clean from sin so that we can live with God
again. This is possible through exercising faith in Jesus Christ, repenting,
being baptized, receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost, and
enduring to the end.

<span style="font-family: Forte; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">To fulfill the plan
of salvation, Christ paid the penalty for our sins. He alone was able to do
that. He was called and prepared in pre-earth life. He was the literal Son of
God in the flesh. He was sinless and completely obedient to His Father. Though
tempted, He never gave in to temptation. When the Father asked His Beloved Son
to pay the price of the world’s sins, Jesus was prepared and willing. The
Atonement included His suffering in the Garden of Gethsemane and His suffering
and death on the cross, and it ended with His Resurrection. Though He suffered
beyond comprehension—so much so that He bled from every pore and asked whether
it were possible that this burden be lifted from Him—He submitted to the
Father’s will in a supreme expression of love for His Father and for us. This
triumph of Jesus Christ over spiritual death by His suffering and over physical
death by His Resurrection is called the Atonement.

I actually had a great run just as it should be, dang it.

There have been a couple attacks on the trail where we run lately- in broad daylight no less! That's why we run together and carry pepper spray. You can get it at the running store, but all the local ones are sold out since the attack last week. We run with a carrying strap around our hand, and our finger is on the trigger while we run.

Danna and I have actually made very detailed plans in case anyone actually attacks it. We even have secret code words. I can't share them on this blog, because, what if the perpetrator reads them and knows when we're spraying the pepper spray, etc.? When you have 10+ miles to run, you have time for careful attention to detail, you know. We actually HOPE some pervert tries to attack us. He'll be soooo sorry. And he won't be getting away either. Or ever...(*ahem)...having any future...relationships.

We have also discussed other techniques, such as making eye contact and looking back over our shoulder at people who pass us, and studying what they're wearing. We've practiced knowing how to describe our exact location to cops. We run with a cell phone. Today Danna even taught me bathroom safety tips (a co-worker was once attacked in the bathroom). They include checking around the corner of the bathroom for lurkers, and then pushing the stall completely open and checking again for a person. And locking yourself in their if possible.

Our other safety issues are dogs. Sheesh people, leash your dogs please!! And PS: don't let our dog over into the on-coming lane where runners are approaching. You surely think we are hoping to get sniffed, and hoping for a chance to pet your cute dog and compliment you. Shockingly, we are hoping to run and avoid getting tripped, bitten, or slimed. Or step in poo for that matter.

Okay, runners. Especially you ladies. Be safe out there! And if someone looks suspicious, I like to have Murray Dispatch in my phone list: 840-4000. :)
Ok, so on my last post I put all the pix of things I have used for my PF, right? Well, it really is getting better. I DID rest it for MONTHS. Just ask Danna, she's my witness ("No, sorry, I still can't run. The foot, you know...") Resting it seemed to get rid of it, and I rested a lot longer than the symptoms lasted jsut to be sure. But now I have to be very careful. I'm afraid it may flare up during this marathon training, but we'll see.

A couple things I didn't include in the "arsenal:"

This is physical therapy at the U...

This is a little delayed, but D and I have officially started marathon training again. See us on Saturday mornings huffing it out! You can also catch us on weekdays- whining a bit lately as we get ramped up.

I hope she won't mind my announcing this, but did you know- Suzy had her baby a while back! A cuuute baby boy! Just wanted to share. Congrats to Suz and Rick! Can't wait to have her out on the trail again too.

Lastly, Matt took me on a surprise trip for my 30th this week. DISNEYLAND!!!! It was awesome!!!

This weekend I ran the Poki half with my sis, Karin. It was our first race together (well, we did a family 5K once, but didn't run side-by-side).

This race has some great swag- you actually get a bag of Idaho potatoes- how hillarious is that? They even threw in 2 cartons of dehydrated hashbrowns. We got nice black backpacks as our drop bags instead of the usual disposable plastic. We also got a technical t-shirt (women's fit!) and a tube of rub-on sunscreen in addition to the usual race-related coupons and sample packets of stuff. Oh! And the aide stations were sometimes run by local businesses, so like the Ogden half, they had lots of good stuff, like candy, multiple gels for each person (at each aid station! We totally stocked up.), etc. It was, unfortunately, a brand I don't like. Too potent-tasting. Kar and I gagged 'em down. At the end of the race they served stuffed baked potatoes (ha ha again!) which totally hit the spot. Let's face it- all food seems to hit the spot after a race.

The race weather was perfect! A nice little breeze. Another lovely aspect of the race is that it started at 8am. You who read my blog know how I loathe race mornings usually, but this wasn't bad at all! Kar and I decided to get all gussied up- wearing big dangly earings (very light-weight and didn't bother us at all) and flowers, colorful headbands, and braids. We were hot. Most people cheering cheered for the flower girls, or the dairy girls (braids?) or the earring ladies. We started off pretty wild and crazy- shouting lot's of "Woo!"s and "Yeah!"s. Karin thought it would be fun to run all serpentine for a bit. I wonder if that would make it a full marathon?

Here are some of the things from the race that stick out in my mind.

The hills! It was hilly. Waaa.

My cute nephew at the end so excited to see us and reaching out for me. Love him! We took him to the "bounce house" they had at the finish line adn he went nuts.

I thought racing with braids in your hair would wap against you but they didn't

A few of Karin's friends from church were biking and spotted us. They rode with and encouraged and chatted with us providing excellent entertainment and distractions.

I never donned my sunglasses since the sun was always behind us- lovely!

We witnessed a car accident! One of the high school teens running the aid station pulled out and was cheering for a runner as he was slammed into by on-coming traffic. Whoops!! We think everyone was okay, but of course it scared the crap out of us (SCREEEEEEEEEEEEEEECH!!!! ....BOOM!). We didn't know what to do. do we run back? Let the others just help? Keep going?

We picked up 3 gels off the ground. Unopened and good as new, thank you! :)

We whinnied at horses and did that blowy cheek thing they do, and they talked back to us. They seemed very excited about the race (seriously- they were dancing and prancing and watching everyone).

We held hands over the finish line- sweeeet.

Thanks for reading!
Happy running!
XOXO

First of all, if you're thinking of getting the Eat, Pray, Love soundtrack, don't. Before I saw the movie, I saw the soundtrack at Nordstrom and from the list of songs on the back (this samba, that tango, this Italian number, a Pearl Jam hit) it looked awesome. It was boring and not good.

This has been a crazy couple of weeks. We went to Lake Powell as a family, and my sister in law Dori stayed with us for a couple weeks. It was so fun. Here are a couple of my favorite shots:

We did early morning P90X yoga atop the boat. Check out Matt's amazing crow pose in the next shot!

(Question: Does anyone else have the annoying problem of pressing "enter" and having Blogger's cursor go to the beginning of the line instead? What the?? And can any of you expert bloggers help me figure out which photo of mine is causing the Photobucket icon to stay floating on the blog??)

So I want to tell you of a GREAT race in Utah. The Young Living Lavender 5K. What a fun day with the girlfriends! Amber, Danna, Hayley and I went together. We had such a blast! The 5K wound through these lovely, and fragrant fields of lavendar. It was a really fun group too. And then there was a lavender store where we bought lovely things like lavender oil, chapstick, and even lavender cookbooks! Come join us for lavender hot chocolate some time! We also picked lavender and made wreaths and little bundle/bouquet thingies. They were awesome and fun to make. Definitely doing this race next year.
Last weekend I went to Vegas with Krissy and Cathy and we worked at the DefCon convention selling t-shirts (or alternating the babysitting duties.) We often stayed up waaaay late talking and I loved it! It was so good to get to spend time with Krissy! Including getting to know her kid and hear all about her pregnancy. PS: Look at the crazy amazing pools at Ceasar's Palace!
Also my friend Ceri is in town from England. She, Denise and I got together for a little sleepover (and later a reunion with all our fabulous nanny friends (we used to be nannies in NY and CT. I miss it!!) We did some major catching up and I loved every second of it. It included such events as a trip to the urgent care clinic, neon orange "syrup," and the traditional arm tickle train.
Last night my old college buddies Sarah and Sarah :) and their husbands came over and we had a blast catching up and talking for hours. We talked mostly about mommyhood, which is a topic I am ALWAYS fascinated by. I'm so glad we finally got together. YAY! (I didn't take a picture guys! Send me one?)

...So I'm having some major nostalgia. It's amazing how much my girlfriends have come to mean more to me the older I get. They make me a better person and they inspire me and make me laugh. Matt is lucky I have them because they definitely make me a better wife too.

Anyway, I'm avoiding the topic of running right now because I have nothing nice to say. I had a crappy run this morning and my foot issues.... Ugh. I won't go into detail right now, but it's sooo frustrating to have rested and cross-trained for SO long and still have these issues. WHY?

Well, more details and stuff when I have the strength to talk about it without tears. :P

(This is Kristin by the way.)

I am way behind in my blogging here. Yay for the new Blogger changes- especially the return of spell check! Woot. If I have not visited your blog lately, I am catching up on that too. Don't worry, I have not abandoned you, by bloggy friends.

Let me start catch up with my most recent long run. I 15-miler with Danna. I only made it through like 14. Rough at the end- I even got light headed.

Danna and I have been a little lazy with our running lately- especially at Girls' Camp. I was especially out of shape and gaining some nice new fat deposits is seems. Well, this 15 miler started around 6 and was hot and muggy!! We went through a ton of water and Gatorade (both for drinking, and pouring on ourselves. I even accidentally poured Gatorade all over myself at the very end).

We ran into Larry Payne around mile 9 and he joined us for the final few miles. At first I refused him. "No way Larry- I'm pooped. I can not run at your pace today." Well, he insisted and went at our pace, and was great entertainment, and a helpful distraction for the rest of the run! He even did the final mile+ with Danna when I got light headed and stopped.

After the run, I iced at my house in the way I always do. Sticking my feet right on the ice packs. I know they always say not to do this, but have you ever put a towel (even a paper one) on your ice and still had the cold get through adequately? I have never had a problem just icing directly. Until now.

So, I'm embarrassed to say- I got a cold injury. Does it classify as frost bite? Not sure, but I got it bilaterally on my heels and a couple toes. It was totally scary and freaked me out. Then it got super painful- just like a bur, and I couldn't walk on it for a few days. Who else does this happen to? No one! I have never heard of a cold injury among my real life acquaintances, friends, or family. Unless it was a legitimate winter-time thing.

I made D come over and assess my injury (she's a nurse) and it had a freaky discoloration and blisterage. After a few days the crazy pain quit- thank heavens!!! And now I am walking normal again.

Oh dear. Please be careful icers. I have learned that chemical cold packs get colder than regular ice, and if you insist on direct contact, just use ice in a Ziploc. This advice came from the guys at the wound clinic. Also, a foot in a bucket of ice water is perfect!

I still believe in icing. It makes a big difference. But I also believe in non-amputation.

Love, K
It is Suzy. I've been out of the running loop since the awesome Ogden Half-Marathon (anyone for the Ogden full next year?). I was disappointed that once I pinned my number on my pregnant belly, it was difficult to tell I was pregnant from the front. I was sure to mention it as we passed people. As well as yell it out at the end so people would cheer for me and I wouldn't stop and walk.
I went on a 4 mile run the Tuesday after and my legs felt like jelly. I tried to jog about a week later and found that my belly had increased exponentially in size during that week off. Too much pull on the muscles to run comfortably any more. So where does that leave me? No more runs with Danna and Kristin. :( Just a lot of water running and elliptical cross training.
Why those two activities? Danna and Kristin once told me that those two exercises are equivalent to running. For elliptical work, mileage is a one to one ratio. For water running, time is a one to one ratio. I don't know if that is really true but it makes me feel good about my exercise as I wait for my little one to arrive.
When I water run, I use the same water belt that many use for water aerobics. I have a hard time telling how hard I am "running" because I don't sweat. It also takes me a minute or two to try to get the right running motion down instead of a swimming kick. One day I "ran" next to another lady in the pool. She was pretty fast. I asked her what her secret was and she told me she was "riding a bike." No wonder she was so much faster than me!
I can only manage about an hour long water run. (I think I once did an hour and a half) I just don't have a waterproof ipod to listen to and no friends to talk to. Boohoo for me. I do like the weightless feeling and the time to relax my pregnancy muscles. Yeah for me.
Danna and Kristin, of course, miss me terribly. They ran Ragnar with my husband just because they miss me so much. (It was a good choice. He runs much faster than me and isn't even close to being as emotional as I am at this point.)
I am curious to see how labor will go and my recovery will be after consistently exercising. And maybe 16 years from now, we will have a cross country star in our family.Suzyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01202245145730727151noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4394342616094392914.post-45384503469114400232010-06-30T22:28:00.003-06:002010-06-30T22:34:30.653-06:00Ok all, get a move on

Hey all- the lavender run is now only about 10 days away!

For those who don't know anything about this race, here's a quick summary:

We run 190 miles (Logan to Park City) through lovely canyons and over mountains and everything!

You run in a team of 12 (2 vanloads of 6 people) and each runner runs 3 legs of the race. Each leg is about 3-9 miles and they all vary in difficulty.

There is a baton, which is actually a slap bracelet, and there is always some member of your team running- even in the middle of the night! The race takes 2 days!

Each team is responsible for supporting their own runners with drinks, supplies, etc. You basically drive up to the runner and ask what they need several times throughout their run. You run water, Gatorade, GU (in my case- always chapstick and a kleenex much to my team's amusement) across the street to them- which all the other vans are doing. It makes for some seriously crazy street situations as you can imagine.

Well, all I can say is...I don't know what to say. In the words of Charles Dickens, "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times." :) I mean, it was a totally unforgettalbe adventure, and I'm glad I did it! It was completely unique from any other racing or running experience. But it was HARD, a lot of work, sleepless, hot at times.

Here are a few interesting things from my experience:

There were vans, buses, and Suburbans EVERYWHERE- all decorated according to their team name and theme. And people went all out! One truck was converted into a huge mammoth- humongous tusks and all. Many were completely covered in paint, or tape, or posters, or vinyl letters and pictures. It was amazing. Every clever thing you could ever think of that has to do with running was on some van or another!

For those of you who have been asking- no there was never any stinkiness or B.O. smell! When I got home, Matt said I only smelled like sunscreen. Amazing, huh?

Our van got a break for 5 hours. We set up camp in a church parking lot and tried to catch some Z's. None of us actually slept except for Tom, who was then rudely awoken by the sprinkler system.

I had great team members. Or van consisted of Ben, Tom, Rick, Emily, Danna and me. Aka: (respectively) our fearless leader, a most delightful and pleasant person, easy-going nice guy who runs super fast, lovely girl who was tough as nails, and BFF.

The PTA in one town had commandeered the high school and were selling tickets to sleep in the school, use the shower, eat, and go to the flushing restrooms. Heartless and genius at the same time. I bought a bathroom and shower ticket. That locker room was a mad house, A flesh pot, if you will. A soap and water mess full of desperate women with their toothbrushes and shower tickets.

Some teams came in full costume. We saw leather-clad gladiator women, running in boots and fishnets, men dressed as female nurses with polyester dresses and big blond wigs, and couples dressed in wedding attire! The women ran with veils, the men with bowties and cummerbunds.

Our team name was "La Muerte Fea" (Ugly Death). I was runner #7. I was the first in our van to run. My first leg was at like 3 pm in the killer heat! Seriously- hottest run of my life! Dump water on me!! It was 4 miles. I learned that most Ragnar runners are not chatty, don't run in a clump, try to pass you if possible, wear ipods, and have vans who follow and leap frog them closely. I learned how to stretch on the run. The van doesn't rest when you finish. Cool down is sitting in the front seat fanning yourself.

My second run was the night run. About 4 miles again. And hilly! Y'all know I don't do well with hills, right? I was STRUGGLING on some of those miles and so were the runners near me. I passed most of them. I secretly wanted my van to go away so I could walk or crawl. I wore the required reflective vest, "butt lights," and our team's LED flashers. I felt like a small Christmas tree. I whined to Ben and he would hear none of it. I realized later that my run was only a "moderately difficult run." Most team members had "hard" and "very hard" runs. I'm a weeny, but...hey. I learned this run that your van can get backed up in traffic and make you miss your pass off by a lot. Sorry van # 1! That I need to have my outfits, ice, and meal in one easy to grab sip-lock for when I finish a run, and not have to dig through the trunk over and over at every quick support stop for the next runner. I learned that out-houses are not sanitary at night when all runners are sleep deprived and stumbling in the dark.

My final run was again in the heat at like 11 am. Hot again. Body tired. No got sleep. Need sprinkler. Need cheer for me. Maybe chafed? Knees stiff. Feel energized that it's my final leg. A few other vans spray me with mist, and cheer for me. One particular van of girls drives next to me and chants, "And I! WOULD! WALK! 5! HUN! DRED! MILES! AND! I! WOULD! WALK! 500! MORE! just to BE! THE! WOman! WHO! WALKED! A! THOU! SAND! MILES! TO! FALL! DOWN! AT! YOUR! DOOR!" I finish and feel great! I get hyper and slap happy and silly and sing to my team mates and hang out the window a lot. I watch them all run killer final legs and I am in awe of them.

Danna and I have really liked Jeff Galloway's books, especially when we first got started. We studied those things like crazy. They really helped in so many ways and I still use a lot of the things I learned in almost every run. So we're giving away a book of your choice. Here are your options:

Jeff Galloway's newest book:
Galloway Training Programs
or
Galloway's Book on Running
(Or if you don't want either of these pick the one you like best on Galloway's site and we'll get you that one! You can decide after you win.)

It's hard to believe, but our little blog is about to have its 100th post! That means I want to follow the blog world trend and do another giveaway to celebrate. So stay tuned and be ready to win some fun stuff in the next post. The thing is, we just haven't decided what. Any requests??

Well thank you all for the well wishes on my beating my half marathon PR by one minute. :) I was kinda surprised none of you non-runners asked what it stands for- did you just figure it out? Google it? There's also "PB," or "Personal Best."

My running report for the week is that I did a lot of cross-training. Matt's doing P-90X right now, so I joined him for a couple work-outs. Danna's a little out of commission since she lost her toenail, again! And if she's not running, I find it hard to get my bum out there at the crack of dawn. Although it is a lot lighter outside of late, which helps. And a lot warmer too!

By the way, I would like to complain that my husband is one of those obnoxious people who can decide to drop a few pounds or totally change his body, and can actually do it in just a few weeks. The P-90X workouts are SUPER hard, and I can't get through a single video in its entirety. And I'm a marathoner! After one week he was able to get through the full videos and is already getting visibly buffer and trim-er. What a punk, eh?

Yesterday I went for a run by myself. I worked during the day so it was an afternoon/evening run in the heat, which I love actually! I had no pre-determined distance (which is rare for me) and I was waiting for Matt to get back from a movie (Prince of Persia. He said it was okay.) so I just ran in a random direction, ended up on the parkway trail eventually (as always) and started running the dirt trails. It was great! I haven't left the asphalt forever! It was a little edsxtra work, especially on looser surfaces, but it was a nice change of scenery. Danna and I heard about a stabbing on the parkway last week (around 4100 S.) so that's another reason not to run alone in the AM- at least not without our trusty pepper spray. I got a little nervous in some of the remote trail areas. You never know who could be lurking around. It was fun to see all the families out. And all the dogs (almost all off-leash, I might add!)

So how do you runners like running trails as opposed to running on paved paths?

XOXO

I barely slept the night before the race- lots of tossing and turning and checking the clock. I have decided I hate race mornings with their painfully early hours and endless to-dos (up at 3:30, drink water, bathroom, Glide, belt, outfit, chip, bib, drink water, winter clothes, bathroom, sunscreen, hair, face, shoes, map...). Matt took me to the buses where I met up with D, S, Amber, Rick, and Julie. The bus ride up took forever! I wondered if they had mistaken us for the full marathoners. The drives are always humbing,, helping you realize just how long the race actually is. The race starts up lovely Ogden Canyon in a charming city called Eden. There we racers waited for a looong time (the other thing I don't like about race morning).

The temp was a little cold at the start, but I must say that the weather throughout the entire race was absolutely perfect. It was nice and sunny, yet cool with a slight breeze. We keep getting lucky in our races, weather-wise.

As we all kindof got into the groove of our paces, Danna and I paired off, and within a mile or 2 Suzy caught up to us (6 months pregnant, might I add?) and we ran together for a while. D and S knew I wanted a PR this race, and I was determined to run alone if needed. They tend to have to make bathroom stops often. When aid stations were coming up they would sprint ahead and make a VERY speedy bathroom visit. I would slow down a bit and we'd get together again. At one point I realized that I really needed to speed up if I was going to make my PR. We were having so much fun chatting and it was just like the old training runs we 3 used to do together (we haven't had a really long 'long run' together in ages).

Then I had an epiphany. Why was it important for me to beat my PR? I'm not a fast runner, I'm not trying to qualify for anything. What I like about running and racing is the experience of it. A PR is nothing but me competing with myself and possibly not enjoying races as much. I decided to stick with the girls and love the race. And seriously, this race was just pure joy! It's so nice to feel good, run with fabulous girlfriends, and just take it all in.

The aid stations for this race were every single mile! And they had the genius idea of letting local businesses run the aid stations. Every station is basically an ad for that business, and they compete which each other to have the coolest station. It's ridiculous how full our belt pouches were by the end of the race. They gave away such things as...a whole pack of Five brand gum, every flavor of GU and Clif Bar at every station, otter pops, hard candies, skittles, twizzlers, pretzels, fruit, other candy, and every first aid item imaginable (Icy Hot, Vasoline, Sunscreen packets, etc.) How fun is that. Danna, for example, had over $15 worth of GU in her belt at the finish line. Funny!

As for the course itself, it was absolutely gorgeous! We ran through the beautiful canyon, always next to either a big pretty lake with boats and ducks, or a lovely river with charming little houses all along it. And the hills were green and gorgeous. Then we run through this charming little series of parks on a running trail- under trees, under and over bridges, through tunnels. The race ends on Historic 25th Street with a huge crowd.

A few other pluses for this race:

None of the aid station bathrooms had a line!! Ever! And this is the only race I've ever run where all the spectators actually cheer for you! (Not just for their loved one.) I mean all of them! And all the volunteers had cow bells or music or something. They were scattered all along the course and constantly cheering. So great! I have nothing but utter praise for the Ogden 1/2. We may consider the full next year it was so great! Oh, and the drop bags? Perfectly organized and ready for you to pick them up yourself. I know you were all wondering.

Okay, so at about mile 10.5 or 11 we were running along happily, and Matt called my cell. He told me exactly what time I had to finish if I was going to make a PR and told me to pick up the pace! I did the math and realized a PR was possible, but only if I ran faster than I ever run. I was feeling so good, I figured, what the heck! Danna and Suzy agreed to do it with me (the babes) and we kicked it into high gear. We were furiously passing people and started even getting annoyed that they were constantly in the way (so not our usual style). We were constantly shouting, "On your left!" and weaving through the people. Thanks to their Garmins, we were ever aware of our speed too. After a while, as you can imagine, we got veeery tired (I remind you again, Suzy is 6 mos. pregnant)! We were doing over 2 minutes per mile faster than our norm.

We began to groan and complain around mile 12.5. We were desperate to see the finish line. The closer we got the more we panted and grimmaced, Adam was there taking our picture at one point and possibly thinking, "Wow, I've never seen them like that. Did they hit the wall or something?" We soon caught sight of the finish line and were outright whining (except Danna, who was the faithful cheerleader. You see, she's been speed and distance training diligently. We saw the pay-off here as she endured much better than we). At mile 13 we were in sheer survival mode. I was doing mantras in my head like never before. Just when I was near despair, the huge Ogden High School band (right next to us) started banging their drums to the perfect, intense beat and their big brass sound willed me forward. I heard Matt scream my name near the finish and had only enough energy to smile at him desperately and blow him a kiss. Danna, Suzy and I finished holding hands! And then it was straight to the mist showers for a loooong turn.

Then someone generously doused Suzy with their water bottle. (She was suddenly way overheated.) Danna took her to the shade and she was soaking wet. Then she suddenly got way too cold and started shivering. Luckily my cousin Jen was a first aid girl there. Long story short, we took Suz to the medical tent where she got such fun medical treatments as this:

Sun + space blanket + new clothes. I'll let Suzy or Danna tell the rest of that story, but bottom line- Suzy and the baby are ok! I also went into the medical tent and got iced (my co-worker Michelle was working there too and wrapped the ice for me). Matt may not have gotten a volunteer shirt this time, but he did sneak into the finisher fair with me. Races must bring out his mischievous side.

Ams finished magnificently too- and at a sweet pace, might I add. We went to look at the chip times and mine was the exact same as my previous PR. I was pissed! All that work for nothing!! But, there is a good ending to this tale my friends. When the official times came out online, mine was ONE MINUTE faster than my previous PR! Hahaha! Yessssss! And it was all worth it.

I haven't run with Danna in a couple weeks and I can totally feel the difference, emotionally speaking. I've rarely run with Suzy and Hayley too. It feels like I haven't been to therapy. The beauty of this therapy is that it's free! There's just something about the combination of the running itself, the girl talk, and the airing of feelings and stories, the validation, and the buring of the calories. I am a better wife and co-worker when I'm getting my group runs in.

My "running girls" can also attest to the fact that if I'm pissed about something and I start ranting about it on the run, I start running super fast. When I start in on a passionate story, Danna says, "Here we go girls- brace yourselves. We're about to run 8's." I get all pumped up on the adrenaline of my story, I yell, I flail, and I feel GREAT! Then after the run, the story's off my chest, and I've run all that pent up frustration out, and I feel all better. My poor running partners though. They are such good sports. They run at my pace without complaint, and they get all into my story- asking good questions and making perfect, validating, girl-friend responses. "No WAY! You are TOTALLY in the right and that is so messed up!" It's the best.

So how could I afford to miss a run? Cuz if I'm not telling a story, someone is, and you know it's a good one. No one wants to miss out. I used to make D and S re-tell me everything they talked about on their long runs if I wasn't there. It's quality conversation, people.

So tomorrow is the Ogden, Utah Half Marathon, starring Amber, Kristin, Danna, Suzy, Rick, Julie, and possible Karin! Oh and Candace at I Have Run. Who did I miss? I'm excited!! And nervous. And stressed. And hoping I don't forget anything since I'm sleeping at Grandma's tonight. This is the view from my hammock on a sunday afternoon dozing away with the hub. You know how if feels to put in about 35 or 40 miles in a week and then spend sunday relaxing? It's heaven right? It gives your body time to catch up, repair, rebuild, and strengthen for the push next week. Marathon training season begins soon, and I am relishing the rest days. I have a big push this week to be ready for Ogden half this weekend. We have a strong team running. Kristin, Suzy, Rick, Amber, Julie, and myself. Rest up AND work hard! Our she runs like a girl team will rock! Enjoy the views and the ride!

Dannahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10102302337437911286noreply@blogger.com8tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4394342616094392914.post-20602121855787590192010-05-04T16:41:00.000-06:002010-05-05T13:38:05.157-06:00Don't give up...It's Kristin here.

I love this song- tell me you aren't motivated to go run (or whatever it is you do when you're motivated) after listening. I think it would go well in a running mix for the ipod.

Guess what! My sisters are going to run a race with me! Brother in law too. Now we just need to pick a half marathon that doesn't conflict with our family vacation. Ideas? (TOU is out)

XOXO

~K
Kristinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12759525741172489782noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4394342616094392914.post-85140335338483788482010-05-01T21:27:00.003-06:002010-05-05T13:38:18.222-06:00Crawling to the end, and proud of itIt's Kristin.

Today's run was TOUGH for me. I felt gaspy and sluggish pretty much the entire run- almost 3 hours of running. I frequently found myself with my tongue hanging out, canine-like. Hayley is a saint and lengthened her run to be with whiny me. Why was the run so hard? I thinking I was tired, ate me GU and drank my water in a weird sequence, ate a weird dinner last night, cross-trained and "toned" heavily on Wednesday which I'm not used to...you get the idea. I was supposed to run 2 more miles, but quickly and easily justified cutting it short. Now I'm doing what I love to do best after a rough run- icing and lounging in bed. (And listening to the rain too!) I have a lot to do but I'm going to do as much as I can off my feet. Matt's downstairs doing P-90X. And looking VERY cute in his SLC half marathon technical T, might I add?

On a lighter note, I have some big news!! D and I signed up for A FULL MARATHON this year! This is a huge deal and I am very excited to report that it is the Las Vegas Rock and Roll Marathon. There with be rock bands all along the course, about 15,000 runners, and they even shut down the Vegas strip for us to run through! The race is December 5th if you wanna join us or cheer us on.

We were rejected from another race we tried to enter- the San Francisco Women's marathon. Bummer! D is considering doing St. George again, and- get this- the Dublin Ireland Marathon!! If I could afford that trip I would so be there with her. Anyone wanna donate to my cause? :)

Well, all I have to say about my current state is that I do feel proud of myself for what I have accomplished with my running in the past year. I started training for my first marathon a year ago- running very slowly and never having run more that 3 miles. Now I've run a marathon! And today, I persisted in running for hours despite feeling totally tired, and in all reality having the power to call Matt to come pick me up and drive me home at any point if I wanted to. But I di'n'. Hayley and I kept saying, "Ok, we got this, we can DO this," during the last 3 miles or so.

And now a little shout out to my sister Karin, and my friends Amber (aka "Ambleh") and Hayley today, who both ran further than they ever have in their life, IN the rain, AT a decent pace. I'm very proud, ladies! And do my little Rosie who just signed up for her first marathon too! Can't wait to cheer you on in St. George!

Brace yourself- this is a long one.

Woot! I ran the SLC Half last weekend and had a great time! The weather was perfect, and I was in good company. I haven't raced since October, so it was so exciting to be there among the HUGE crowd of runners again and feel the race adrenaline. I must admit to feeling jealous of the full marathoners, and also being in awe of them a bit (despite having recently run a full myself!).

The morning went like this: Matt gets up after a sleepless night worrying about the race (to race or not to race with his lack of training and bad knee). He finally decides to bag it and come cheer instead. I go through the whole lengthy race morning routine including: Glide, sunscreen, belt prep, makeup (and next year I'll be adding self-tanner! Don't hate, low maintenance ladies! See my white flesh in the pictures below and understand.), outfit, nutrition, etc., etc., etc.

Then we go to pick up Danna and her madre. Danna has a near panic attack when Matt changes his parking spot in her driveway "Kristin!! YOUR CAR'S MOVING!!!" I have a near panic atack thinking...What?!! Isn't Matt driving it?! Are we having a race morning emergency?! Waaaa!!! ...But no, it's just Matt moving the car and we laugh and realize the race morning jitters are fully upon us.

We take the TRAX train to the starting line. This part of the day includes such fun stories as: meeting up with Ksenia (D's quasi-sister), lots of racers giving us advice as runners on race day are want to do, a sardine-packed and smelly train ride (How do people already stink?), and me playing a trick on an over-zealous and insane public transit man.

Then the wait. I love looking at the other runners, their routines, their outfits, their race day choices. There was some excellent people-watching that morning. Rock music blared, and we waited in line at the bathrooms most of the hour. The national anthem was awesome- so many thousands of people watching the flag- I love it. Then the gun went off!

We started mid-pack which was new for me (in the full marathon we let the crowd go before we began wayyy back there). It was fun to run in the crowd! We started nice and slow which was tough- I hate having so many runners pass by- and our first walk break felt downright embarrassing. I wanted to tell the runners, "Hey, we don't really need this! We're just trying to be smart, okay?!"

There were a few organization issues this race- looong lines at the bathrooms, ran out of cups at one of the aid stations, and the bag drop was a mess (more on that below). D and her mom stopped for a bathroom break and Ksenia and I continued without them for the rest of the race. We bonded (huh, Ksenia?) big time, which is what happens when you train and race with someone. Danna and I are tied together for life fo'sho'. Ksenia and I had a great time chatting about running, enjoying the course and the perfect weather, checking out all the interesting people (like the guy on the side of the road cooking bacon for any interested runners, and the [then soon to be] winner of the full marathon passing us with a huge, honking police entourage). My favorite part of the race was the trek toward the city and capital building (uphill in fact). It was very epic.

I sprinted at the end which was probably not wise. In order to knock mere seconds off my time, I got some foot soreness I think. It was just so fun!

Okay, after the race there was a big issue. The drop bags (these are bags of your stuff that you go pick up after the race- such as your jacket, and extra gear) were not well organized and you had to stand in a huge line that wasn't moving much and wrapped all around the post-race grounds. I figured it was a 2-hour wait which is ridiculous after you've just raced and want to get off your feet. Matt said, "Let's just ditch your stuff and go pick it up later." But my cute new running shirt was in there and I was not about to ditch it. We went to the back of the park- the area where the bags were held and tried to sweet-talk volunteers into looking for my bag. It was total chaos and we were clearly not the only people who were trying to do so. The poor volunteers were getting lots of angry hassling, the bags were still not fully sorted and poorly organized. After lots of attempts at getting the bag in different creative ways, Matt had had it and said, "I'm going to go get the car, and by the time I get back if you don't have the bag, let's head." Well, I tried, but it was just crazy and impossible. I was about to give up and sure Matt was about to pull up, when I looked over at a strikingly handsome volunteer inside the fence sorting bags- it was Matt!!! He had somehow obtained a volunteer shirt and was gathering mine and my friends' bags, as well as a few other desperate/begging runners around the fence. He looked up at me with a mischievous grin and held his finger to his lips. A few other runners said, "Wait, isn't that your husband?" We all burst out laughing at his cleverness, and I ended up getting out of there much faster. Matt loves me to tell this story. It totally saved his "I didn't end up racing today" blues, and...well now he has a cute new shirt!

Well, that's race day for ya. I am so glad I iced, so glad Ksenia had bottles, and so glad I discovered GU Chomps. Enjoy a few pics!
If you are my mom reading this, warning, you are about to hate this.

This past Saturday was the Salt Lake City marathon and half marathon. As you all know, we have been helping my mom and Ksenia to train (or hindering their training is probably more accurate!)

Post run stretch!

Training run on the Parkway.

Runners World has been publishing a series of articles every month about "my most memorable run". They often say how difficult it is to narrow down your runs. I imagine that may be because of sheer quantitiy we runners tend to do, and also because of those endorphins- they make ya happy. Almost every run is a good run!

Saturday was a specail day for me. Running with my mom in her first race was the opportunity of a lifetime. She is amazing. To train and run your first race in your 60's is admirable. To train and place 7th in your age category is astounding. But it isn't her pace that is most special about my mom. I watched her work to finish training runs, and when it was hard, she would walk- for only a few seconds, then run again. She did this over and over until she reached her distance. One time we were all about half a mile from home when we reached distance. We all said, "Phew!" and began walking. Oh no, not my mom. She ran the rest of the way and waited for us on the porch at home. She never, ever gives up. I learned to just keep going when it's hard, from her. When we crossed the finish line, I was so proud of her. I will forever remember that smile on her face. It was perfection.

I got a real kick of watching my dad rush to several aide stations to cheer her on. I was proud of him too. They are who I hope to turn out to be.

And so Saturday, was my most memorable run.... I think it will be for a very long time.

There is something that bonds running partners together forever. How blessed am I to have it all wrapped up in one person- one of my best friends, my training partner, and of course, my mom.

I'm so proud of you mom. Thanks for running with me. I literally loved every minute.
Way to go 'she runs like a girl' team!!!!

Dannahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10102302337437911286noreply@blogger.com13tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4394342616094392914.post-159869894555556992010-04-19T21:35:00.000-06:002010-04-21T21:36:14.236-06:00GiveawaysHere are some giveaways I'm trying to win!
Good luck to Hayley with the 5K. I am excited for you all.
Hayley and I had a great run yesterday. It was Hayley's longest run ever (10 miles) and my fastest in a while (11 miles in 2:23)! I tried mixing my honey with water at Hayley's suggestion and it worked really well. I take that instead of GU because it is much cheaper. We also saw Mitzi, Larry, Judy, and another regular trail walker. It was fun to be out. I'm looking forward to the Ogden half-marathon in about a month.Suzyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01202245145730727151noreply@blogger.com3
